NASHVILLE, TN – Imagine if your car’s stereo wasn’t just tuned for the vehicle's acoustics, but was tuned specifically for the unique way your ears hear sound. That is no longer a futuristic concept—it is a reality available today.

Nissan and INFINITI have launched Personalized Sound, a groundbreaking new feature that effectively "remasters" music for individual drivers. Available now as a free download on vehicles equipped with Google built-in, this industry-first technology brings the bespoke audio experience of high-end headphones into the driver's seat.

How It Works: A 3-Minute Audio Check-Up

While most car audio systems offer basic bass and treble adjustments, Personalized Sound goes much deeper. Using a dedicated app available on the Google Play store, the system guides drivers through a simple, three-minute hearing test.

The car plays a series of tones at varying pitches and volumes. The driver simply taps the screen to indicate what they can hear. Based on these responses, the app builds a unique hearing profile, automatically adjusting a sophisticated 10-band equalizer (ranging from 50 to 1,200 hertz) to fill in the gaps and smooth out the peaks of the driver's hearing.

"After taking the test, most drivers will notice a clear difference with their new audio profile," said Mitchell Pope, a senior product planner at Nissan. "They'll often pick up details they didn't before, even in songs they've listened to countless times."

Innovation with a Heart: Helping 36 Million Americans

The project was born from a passion for accessibility. Pope, an amateur musician, pitched the idea in early 2024, inspired by the customization found in premium headphones. But the mission quickly became about more than just audiophiles—it became about inclusivity.

With over 36 million Americans living with some form of hearing impairment, standard car audio often falls flat. Key members of the development team, including Program Analyst Patrick Fields, a U.S. Army veteran who experienced hearing loss during his service, helped shape the technology.

"Personalized Sound is ideal for music lovers like me," Fields said. "It's a tangible representation of Nissan's commitment to accessibility."

Code Written by the Next Generation

Perhaps most impressively, this wasn't an outsourced project. It was built in-house at Nissan in less than 18 months. A massive portion of the credit goes to Ashley Baird, an intern from Michigan Technological University.

Baird helped write the code that powers the hearing test and the profile-saving system. She discovered a way to utilize Android audio processing effects to intercept sound going to the speakers and adjust it in real-time.

"The best part was seeing people try the app for the first time," Baird said. "It was awesome to see them realize that something they could just download... could offer so much audio customization that their car didn't previously have."

Available Now: Is Your Car on the List?

The Personalized Sound app debuted on December 15 and is available for download at no cost. It works on both standard and premium audio systems.

Compatible Vehicles (equipped with Google built-in):

The system currently optimizes audio from Bluetooth and in-vehicle apps like Spotify and Audible, with expanded source compatibility expected in 2026.

Drivers can download the app directly from their vehicle's dashboard today to hear their favorite songs as if for the very first time.
