Dog Breeds That Require Frequent Grooming
The Pet Life! | September 18, 2021
Adopting or buying a dog is a commitment. There are areas to consider besides which one is the cutest.

Let’s explore breeds that require frequent grooming.

Being a dog parent is a lot of work, but some breeds demand more work than others, especially when grooming their fur. You may have to make a few compromises when choosing which dog breed is right for you and your family. There are well-known characteristics, such as temperament and exercise, that people think about often. However, maintenance and grooming are also factors to consider. Here are some dog breeds that require frequent grooming but are wonderful to have.

Poodles

There are various types of poodles, and people stereotype all of them as high-maintenance and pampered pets. However, this is far from the truth. This breed is a fantastic addition for a person or family looking for a loving and energetic dog. They do, however, require lots of professional grooming. Their coats are fun to experiment with using different cuts and colors (dog-friendly colors, of course).

Bichon Frise

This dog breed’s coat is actually hair, not fur. It requires regular brushing and combing to prevent mats from forming. Groomers recommend taking Bichon Frises to get bathed and trimmed once a month to maintain their coats.

These fluffy dogs are extremely cheerful, playful, and full of energy. They are great for families with young children and love being with people. They are also ideal for taking on outings.

Afghan Hound

The Afghan Hound is a majestic dog with a gorgeous coat. This breed is famous for its beauty and grace. And yes, they require a lot of brushing to maintain that freely flowing fur.

They are highly playful and fun-loving dogs that can sometimes come across as aloof. However, they love to stick by people at all times and will quickly bond with their families.

Puli

This fun canine is a Hungarian herding dog well-known for its thick, corded coat. It needs a significant amount of grooming to help the cords form and prevent them from becoming matted and dirty.

Pulik are extraordinarily active, intelligent, and make for fabulous companions. They excel in performance sports that call for agility and love spending time outdoors with their families. The pulik are also great with children.

Portuguese Water Dog

The Portuguese Water Dog also has hair instead of fur. Its coat continuously grows, requiring frequent brushing, trimming, and bathing. These dogs are somewhat hypoallergenic and shed very little.

They make excellent running partners and therapy dogs.

Komondor

Just like the Puli, the Komondor breed originated in Hungary. People there bred them to be livestock guards. Their thick coats resemble dreadlocks, and you will need to keep them clean to keep them tidy. After the cords have formed, you’ll need to separate them. Otherwise, they’ll mat, which is painful for the dog.

These dogs are profoundly affectionate and extremely loyal to their families. They’re kind, gentle, and patient to the children who belong in their “packs.” Because of their heritage, the Komondors are protective of families and suspicious of strangers.

Don’t make the mistake of hastily selecting the dog breed that is right for you. Take time to consider the care factors and your lifestyle as well. If you can take on a dog breed that requires frequent grooming, the dog will repay you with bountiful love.
